What To Expect During Your Dental Cleaning

Virginia Beach VA Dentist OfficeThe American Dental Association recommends that all patients see their dentist at least twice a year for routine preventative care. At Coastal Cosmetic + Implant Dentistry, we provide general dentistry services including preventative dental care. Preventative dental care is important for the long-term health of your smile. If it has been a while since you’ve visited the dentist, or if you are unsure what to expect during your visit to our Virginia Beach dentist offices, we’ve provided additional information on what you can expect during your dental cleaning below:

Plaque & Tartar Removal

When you are called back to the exam room, one of our skilled hygiensts will begin to clean your teeth by removing any plaque or tartar buildup surrounding your gum line. The amount of plaque and tartar buildup on your smile is usually an indication of your at-home oral hygiene habits. If you’ve skipped out on brushing and flossing, this allows food residue to harden to your teeth. If the residue is not removed in a timely manner, it will harden into plaque or tartar. It’s a great idea to ask your dental hygiensts how you can improve your oral hygiene routine based on what they observe during your dental cleaning. They will be able to tell you which areas of your smile are affected the most with plaque and tartar, giving you an idea of which areas of your mouth to spend a little extra time on when brushing or flossing. Once all of the plaque and tartar is removed, your dental hygienst will brush and polish your teeth.

Dental Exam

Once your hygienst completes your dental cleaning, they will go get the doctor for a dental exam. When the doctor arrives in your room, they will take a look at your teeth and gums. If they notice any dental concerns, they will make you aware of them and inform you about your treatment options moving forward. If you have been experiencing any dental concerns outside of the dentist office, you should inform your doctor. Any tooth pain, increased dental sensitivity, jaw pain, or dental damage should be discussed with a dental professional. Dr. Sinclair and Dr. Reichley are your experiencced dentists in Virginia Beach. They have helped many patients and community members overcome their dental concerns with high-qualitty dental services and support. Diagnostic X-Rays

Your dentist will likely take diagnostic x-rays during your preventative care appointments. While many dental concerns can show visible symptoms, often we rely on diagnostic x-rays to reveal the full picture of your overall dental health. Usually, patients will have x-rays taken once a year. These x-rays provide invaluable information to your doctors as they are creating your treatment plans or keeping track of developing or aging smiles. Our goal is to prevent minor issues before they develop into major dental concerns, and these x-rays allow us to do just that. If it has been over six months since you last sat in the dental chair, schedule an appointment with our Virginia Beach dentists today. We look forward to seeing you soon.
