If you’re missing a tooth, you’ve probably heard that dental implants are the gold standard for replacement. But you might also have some questions. What actually happens during the process for a single dental implant? How long does it take? Does it hurt? We get these questions all the time at our Virginia Beach office. So let’s walk through the entire journey of a single dental implant, from start to finish.

The Journey of a Single Dental Implant in Virginia Beach, VA

Consultation and Planning

Every great smile starts with a conversation. Before we do anything, we sit down with you and listen. We want to know what’s bothering you about your smile. Maybe you’re self-conscious about that gap. Maybe you’re having trouble chewing. Maybe you just want to stop worrying about your teeth shifting.

We’ll also review your medical history and take some X-rays. But here’s where things get really interesting.

The CBCT Scan

We will take a 3D CBCT scan of your jaw. It shows us the exact shape, density, and thickness of your bone. It also shows us where your nerves and sinuses are. This scan is crucial. It tells us if you’ve got enough bone to support an implant right away, or if you might need a bone graft first.

We’ll go over all the details, answer your questions, and show you what to expect. You’ll leave this appointment knowing exactly what’s ahead.

The Implant Placement Surgery

This is the big day. But don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds. We numb the area completely. You won’t feel any pain during the procedure. If you’re nervous, we can also talk about sedation options to help you relax.

Your dentist makes a tiny incision in your gum to expose the bone underneath. Then they use a series of special drills to create a small hole in the jawbone. This hole is precisely sized and angled based on that CBCT scan we took. Finally, they gently place the titanium implant post into that hole. It looks like a small screw. Then they stitch your gum back over the implant.

And that’s it. The entire procedure usually takes about an hour for a single tooth. Most patients tell us the recovery feels similar to having a tooth extracted. You might have some minor swelling or tenderness for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually handle it just fine.

Healing and Osseointegration

Osseointegration is a fancy word for a simple process. Over the next 3 to 6 months, your jawbone will actually grow around the implant. It fuses with the titanium post, locking it firmly in place. This is what makes implants so incredibly strong. Think of it like how a tree’s roots grow deep into the soil, anchoring it against wind and storms. Your implant does the same thing in your jawbone.

During this healing period, you’ll eat soft foods and take it easy on that side of your mouth. We’ll check in with you periodically to make sure everything’s on track.

The Final Restoration

Once your implant is fully healed and fused with your bone, it’s time for the finishing touch. Your dentist makes a small opening in your gum to expose the top of the implant. Then they attach a small connector piece called an abutment. This is what will hold your new tooth.

We take impressions of your teeth and send them to our dental lab. They custom-make a porcelain crown that matches the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth. A few weeks later, you’ll come back in. Your dentist will screw or cement that beautiful new crown onto the abutment.

And just like that, you’ve got a complete smile again.

Restore Your Bite Today

When you look in the mirror, you shouldn’t be able to tell which tooth is the implant. They are designed to blend perfectly with your natural teeth. It feels natural too. No clicking, no slipping, no special cleaning routine. Just brush and floss like normal.

Your single dental implant can last for decades with proper care. That’s the kind of result that makes all the time and effort worth it.
