If you have lost most or all of your teeth, you have probably heard about All-on-4 implants and removable implant-supported dentures. Both options can restore a functional, attractive smile. But they work very differently.
At Coastal Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry in Virginia Beach, Dr. Cappy Sinclair and Dr. Mark Reichley help patients understand the differences between these two popular tooth replacement solutions. Your choice affects how you eat, how you care for your teeth, and how your smile feels day to day.
We proudly serve patients from Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, and all surrounding communities.

What Are Removable Implant-Supported Dentures?
Removable implant-supported dentures are also called overdentures. They use two to four dental implants to secure a removable denture for cleaning. The implants act as anchors, so the denture snaps into place and stays put while you wear it. But you remove it at night or when you want to clean it thoroughly.
This option gives you much better stability than traditional dentures that just rest on your gums. You don’t have to worry about your denture slipping when you talk or eat. But you still have a removable appliance, which takes some getting used to.
What Is All-on-4?
All-on-4 uses four dental implants to support a permanent, fixed bridge of replacement teeth. The bridge is screwed onto the implants and stays in your mouth all the time. You never have to remove it.
The implants are placed strategically. The two front implants are vertical, and the two back implants are angled to grab onto denser bone. This design lets Dr. Sinclair and Dr. Reichley place implants even when you have lost some bone in your jaw. Many patients can avoid bone grafting entirely.
All-on-4 is a permanent solution. It looks, feels, and functions much closer to natural teeth than removable options.
How Do They Compare?
Stability and Security
Removable dentures: The implants keep your denture secure. They won’t slide around like a traditional denture. But they can still shift slightly if you bite into something very hard or sticky. You never have to worry about it falling out, but you also can’t get the same rigid feel as a fixed bridge.
All-on-4: Your new teeth are permanently attached. They don’t move at all. You can bite into an apple or eat corn on the cob without thinking twice. The fixed bridge restores about 80% to 90% of your natural chewing power. Traditional dentures give you only 25% to 50% of your bite force.
Bone Health
Removable dentures: Dental implants do provide some stimulation to your jawbone. This helps slow down the bone loss that happens when you are missing teeth. But removable dentures don’t stimulate the bone as effectively as a fixed, full-arch restoration.
All-on-4: The fixed bridge distributes chewing forces across all four implants and your jawbone. This continuous stimulation helps preserve bone density over the long term. Many patients maintain their facial structure better with a fixed solution.
Maintenance
Removable dentures: You need to remove your denture to clean it properly. Use a special brush and cleaner to remove plaque and food particles. You also need to soak your denture overnight. This is an extra step in your daily routine.
All-on-4: You brush and floss your new teeth just like natural teeth. You don’t need special cleaners or overnight soaking. You do need to clean under the bridge, but your dental team will show you how. The maintenance is simpler and more like what you are used to.
Longevity
Removable dentures: Implant-supported dentures are more durable than traditional dentures, but the replacement teeth can still wear out over time. You may need to have the denture rebased or replaced after 5 to 7 years.
All-on-4: With proper care, All-on-4 implants can last 20 years or more. The titanium implants often last a lifetime. You can replace the bridge on top if needed, but the foundation stays solid.
Cost Over Time
Removable dentures: Implant-supported dentures have a lower upfront cost than All-on-4. But you will have ongoing costs. Relines, adjustments, and replacements add up over the years. You also need to factor in the cost of cleaning products and adhesives.
All-on-4: The initial investment is higher. But you pay less for maintenance over time. No adhesives, no relines, and no replacements every few years. Many patients find All-on-4 offers better value over their lifetime.
Aesthetics and Confidence
Both options can give you a great-looking smile. But many patients feel more confident with a fixed restoration. All-on-4 stays in place 24 hours a day. You never have to worry about someone seeing you without your teeth.
Which Option Is Right for You?
The right choice depends on your goals and your health. Dr. Sinclair and Dr. Reichley will evaluate your bone density and oral health. They will discuss your budget and lifestyle.
Removable dentures might be a good fit if:
- You prefer a lower initial cost
- You are comfortable with a removable appliance
- You have less bone density and aren’t a candidate for a fixed bridge
All-on-4 might be a better fit if:
- You want a permanent, non-removable solution
- You want to feel as close to natural teeth as possible
- You want to avoid daily removal and soaking
- You are looking for a long-term investment in your oral health
